The ketogenic diet has been used as an accepted therapy for drug-resistant epilepsy for nearly a century. There is a growing extension of ketogenic diet therapy to other medical conditions and as a weight loss lifestyle trend.
This session includes an evidence-based overview of efficacy and quality of life improvements, which also led to the development of the PEN® knowledge pathway and tools. A description of assessment, implementation methods and strategies to ensure sustainability of the diet are reviewed. The evidence for potential risks, harm and benefits of the ketogenic diet are also discussed.
Listeners will be equipped to discuss a client’s request for more information, appreciate the complexity of ketogenic diet therapy, and strategies to mitigate and monitor for potential risks.
