Acid/Base Status and Metabolic Abnormalities: How Does This Affect My Practice?

BUY ITEM | $ 24.95

In this session, Dr. Girard begins with a brief review of the physiology of acid and base handling in patients and how the body compensates during states of metabolic or respiratory acidemia or alkalosis. He discusses clinical scenarios such as chronic vomiting, diarrhea, diabetic ketoacidosis, renal failure and severe lung disease.

Listeners will gain an understanding of how these disturbances impact the nutritional status of patients and how to best manage nutrition support prescriptions (enteral or parenteral nutrition). Case studies are used to highlight the interpretation of available lab data as it pertains to clinical decision making. Finally, Dr. Girard provides an overview of other metabolic disturbances and how those may impact the decision making by care providers as well as to highlight proper investigations.
