Glycemic Index Education: Translating Knowledge to Action

An Evidence-based Glycemic Index Education Platform for Nutrition Educators

The glycemic index (GI) first appeared in the literature in the early 1980s, growing out of clinicians’ desire to improve standard medical nutrition therapy for people living with diabetes mellitus (DM). Carbohydrate containing foods can be categorized as low, medium and high GI. Evidence suggests a diet including low GI foods may be beneficial for the prevention or treatment of a number of chronic conditions. In fact, Diabetes Canada's Clinical Practice Guidelines include low GI foods as part of medical nutrition therapy for managing DM. Despite this, 61% of Canadian dietitians, working with clients with DM, do not use GI in practice. One of the barriers identified in the literature is that educators desire better and more job aids to support GI education in practice.

This mixed-medium program, including video-, audio- and file-based mediums, aims to fill this need by answering commonly asked questions about GI, addressing common GI mythology, highlighting creditable resources and providing users with examples of nutrition educators applying GI in practical settings.

Dr. Wolever and Dr. Grant have worked together since 2004 on examining GI knowledge translation. They have invited current and past trainees to share their experiences and lessons learned in GI education in efforts to provide dietitians and other health educators with practical approaches to interpreting evidence available on GI and how to integrate it into practice.

The course includes case studies, interactive activities, self-reflections, and additional resources for further reading. The ability to earn ‘badges’ as you complete module activities has been integrated to further engage the learner.

This course is estimated to take 5 to 6 hours to complete. The certificate of completion will indicate 4.0 Credit Hours once you have successfully completed the program
