BUY ITEM | $ 24.95

In this session, Bénédicte Fontaine-Bisson and Yvonne Lamers will provide a critical review of the history and current practice of periconceptional folic acid recommendations and shed light on the misalignment between prenatal supplements and current expert guidelines. They will also provide an overview of barriers and potential strategies for overcoming them as identified by key stakeholders from academia, industry, government and health care professional associations during a one-day workshop held in Ottawa.

After this presentation, you will be able to:

  • explain the research behind the current recommendations and review current folate status and folic acid supplement use among Canadian childbearing-aged and pregnant women;
  • discuss the challenges and concerns from stakeholders to aligning recommendations with practice, and
  • discuss potential strategies to align recommendations and practice and avenues for implementation by dietitians and other healthcare professionals.
